Linux HID:Connecting Human and Machines More Naturally
Humans are master creators, and machines are designed to make our lives easier. But sometimes it can be difficult to get them to interact with each other seamlessly. To bridge this technology gap and ensure that human-machine interactions are carried out more naturally and efficiently, we have Human Interface Devices (HIDs).
In computing, the HID is the protocol used for input devices to interface with computers. Specifically, HID allows for the transfer of information between the two – such as mouse movement and key presses – in order to automate certain tasks. HIDs are used on many operating systems such as Windows, Mac, and Linux.
In Linux, there are many vendors releasing HID-interfaced products through the HID protocol with support for all major Linux distributions. For example, Logitech offers a variety of products, from keyboards to mouses, as well as webcams and other video devices, all of which are capable of interfacing with Linux-based computers through HID. Additionally, many devices have direct HID support out of the box, such as the Xbox controller, Sony PlayStation controllers and Nintendo Switch controllers.
Apart from device control, the HID protocol is also used in many biometrics devices such as fingerprint scanners, voice recognition devices and facial recognition technology. These devices allow users to securely access various aspects of their personal computing experiences. HID also supports universally accepted standards, such as the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) Human Interface Device Access (HIDA). This standard ensures that any device certified for HIDA is compatible with any Linux system.
In the past, Linux operating systems were criticized for their poor hardware recognition capabilities, making it hard for users to connect a variety of different devices to their systems. However, the adoption of the HID protocol has eliminated the need for installing 3rd-party drivers, allowing more users to access peripherals that are compatible with their systems.
The HID protocol has made it easier for humans to interact with machines in a more natural and harmonious fashion, enabling humans to use machines as an additional set of tools in order to get their work done more efficiently. HID has revolutionized the way we interact with our computing devices, allowing us to get the most out of them with minimal effort.
